Become a Museum Volunteer
Volunteers are an integral part of the Claremont Museum of Art. Dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers help the Museum fulfill its mission by generously contributing time, energy, and expertise to education and outreach programs as well as to administrative operations.
Volunteers can expect to participate in satisfying experiences working with children, teens, college students, and community members. There are networking opportunities with artists and community leaders, and you can expect to expand your own understanding of art and be challenged by new ideas.
Docents act as liaisons between the Museum and the general public. They are facilitators who serve the Museum and the community in the field of art education, awareness, and appreciation. They are knowledgeable - or willing to learn - and passionate about the arts. They are of all ages with diverse backgrounds and experiences. It is a stimulating experience for both visitors and docents and is an essential part of the Museum's education and outreach programs.
Docents contribute to the Museum in several ways: As Art Dialogue guides for visitors, they present content and background on the Museum's mission, exhibitions and artists in a manner that encourages participation and dialogue. They research and prepare background information on works of art in the Museum's collection and special exhibitions, and they give presentations at local schools and community organizations.
Museum Store and Welcome Desk The Museum needs enthusiastic volunteers to welcome visitors, sell memberships and provide excellent customer service at our museum store and welcome desk. Volunteers must be friendly and enjoy working with people.
Event Volunteers work during exhibition openings and other special events by assisting with check-in and membership and serving as hosts in the galleries. They may also assist with art-making programs on Family Days at the Museum.
Gallery Preparation Curatorial staff needs assistance with 'back room' tasks such as supply room set-up, archive room preparation, gallery painting, adjusting lights, and possibly some light carpentry when preparing for exhibitions.
Interns assist the Museum staff with special projects as they learn about the operation of an art museum. College students may be able to receive academic credit for their time as an intern.
How to Become a Volunteer All interested individuals are invited to apply. We encourage and welcome a diversity of backgrounds and age groups (16 and older). We hope to form an exciting and enthusiastic corps of volunteers from all walks of life. Please complete the online application form. A Museum representative will contact you for an interview and orientation.
